'Khayman drew closer to Mael, but he stopped short of him by several feet, the crowd passing
ceaselessly in front of them. This he did out of respect for Mael’s apprehension, and the
shame the creature felt for being afraid. It was Mael who approached and
stood at Khayman’s side.'
Their meeting at Lestat’s concert is fascinating and it is great evidence of Khayman’s wise
and tolerant nature. Evidently Mael was preoccupied with worry for Jesse and perhaps as a
result of this, was deeply suspicious of Khayman. Khayman is so ancient, his friendly and
kind nature could be a little surprising to some. It appears that after their first
meeting, Mael became fonder of Khayman because he sat beside him at the Sonoma Compound
meeting.
