Dear Diary,
My home state often had to cope with drought conditions. However, occasionally we would
receive too much water and the few lakes and streams would overflow their banks. One year, the
largest lake flooded to the extent that the state legislature passed a law decreeing that the lake could
not rise above a certain level. Now I understand that they were trying to limit the flood damage,
but to pass a law against a lake?????
One of my sisters asked, "What are they going to do, arrest the lake?" I suppose the police could
go to the water's edge and say, "You're under arrest for exceeding the flood limit. Put your
tributaries behind your back. Cuff it Dan-O!" (Sorry, wrong show.)
As water is very difficult to hold, what happens if the lake gets away? Will its' picture appear on
wanted posters? "Have you seen this lake? It's on the FBI's list of ten most wanted criminals. It is
wet and considered dangerous."
Of course there is no jail capable of holding the lake so it would have to be placed on probation.
The judge's orders should be interesting. "You are not allowed to leave the vicinity of the lake
bed; nor associate with known fugitive waterways." Also a probation officer would have to be
appointed, and the only one capable of controlling a lake is Mother Nature. Does anyone know if
she is considering a career change?
