Dear Diary,
What is it about common sense that eludes politicians? Recently, our town experienced a water
main break that emptied all but one of the town's water towers. Restrictions were such as no
outdoor water use were enacted and some households had to boil their water before using it.
Granted water lines can break, but the town council knew about the leak for several days. It was
reported on a Friday afternoon and was thought to be caused by a loose bolt. The decision was
made to wait until Monday to fix it. How remarkable considering that the town is having to buy
water from neighboring cities just to meet current needs.
Even if the leak had been caused by a loose bolt (which it wasn't--the pipe broke), a town faced
with a water shortage should not be wasting any of it by tolerating a leak. So here our town
leaders were waiting until Monday and naturally, the pipe broke on Sunday. I guess they never
heard of "Murphy's Law" or what happened in Yellowstone National Park when other officials
decided to "let it burn".
Well at least the town's repair policy has been changed, now ALL LEAKS WILL BE REPAIRED
IMMEDIATELY. We're just faced with one small problem--how is the town going to pay for the
street repairs?
